Exchange 2007 Single Mailbox Restore

Prerequisites

  • There has to be enough storage space on the Exchange server for the restoring Storage Group
  • A Recovery Storage Group has to be created for the restoring Storage Group
  • The Exchange Management Console/Toolbox has to be installed

Procedure

Creating a Recovery Storage Group

  • Start the Exchange Management Toolbox over the Start Menu and then create a new Recovery Storage Group via the item Create new Recovery Storage Group.

  • Selection of the according Storage Group that contains the desired Mailbox:

  • The target directories for the Recovery Storage Group need to provide enough storage space for the restore.

  • Next, create the Recovery Storage Group using the button Create the new recovery Storage Group.

Restore of the files into the Recovery Storage Group

Now the files are restored via a restore-job by Sesam. In the example the Storage Group is restored into the Recovery Group via a complete restore. This way only the needed Storage Group is saved. The other files are skipped. If you have enough Exchange know-how you can even restore a single Storage Group via a selective file-restore.

Since the restore doesn't overwrite the original files but instead writes the files into the Recovery Area the entry Don't overwrite existing files may remain checked in Execution-Options. Furthermore, "Auto recover and online after restore" has to be selected so the Recovery Area is mounted.

Merge of the Mailbox files

  • Selection of the Recovery Group from which single mailboxes can be selected for the restore in the next step.

  • The following confirmation and the start of the merge process:

  • Selection of the individual mailboxes:

Exchange 2007 Single Mailbox Restore into different Target-Mailboxes

Using the Exchange Management Console there is also the option of restoring single contents into seperate folders of different mailboxes or the same mailbox. Creating the Recovery Storage Group works the same as in the steps mentioned above except that the merge isn't done by the Exchange Management Toolbox afterwards but instead with the Exchange Management Shell.

Procedure

  • Starting the Exchange Management Shell - the Exchange Management Shell has to be executed with administrative rights.

In this example the previously restored contents of the mailbox of the user "sesam" are merged into a mailbox subfolder of the target mailbox of the user "restore". For this the command line tool restore-mailbox is used. This is the syntax:

The name of the Recovery Storage Group referrs to the Recovery Group that has been created before with the Exchange Management Tools.

The following output has to be confirmed with y for Yes.

Afterwards the according files are merged and the user "restore" can see the contents of the mailbox of the user "sesam" in their Outlook in a seperate folder:

Single or several mails can now be moved to the according mailbox or the desired folder via Drag'n'Drop.
