This manual describes how to backup and restore data from Exchange Server 2003.
The installation on the client is now finished.
Next, connect the new SEPsesam client to the SEPsesam Server.
There are two ways of backing up an Exchange 2003 System:
Backing up all the Storage Groups in a single backup event or task has significant downside when the System Administrator needs to perform a restore operation. The restore requires a high level of knowledge or information regarding the details of the files to be selected for restore. If this level of expertise in not available then a more time consuming restore must occur. In this scenario the entire backup set must be restored to a "Recovery Storage Group" directory or folder. This awkward event can be circumvented by selecting the send option above.
Setting the backup task to a Single Storage Group Database allows greater granularity and knowing in which group the user or data exists could save a great deal of time.
The backup definition for backing up all storage groups is simply the Exchange Servers name, like that shown in this Screen shot. SEP Sesam will automatically detect all available Storage Areas.
In order to be able to backup a certain database of a Storage Group, the backup source definition should appear as follows:

During the Restore several Microsoft Tools are used:
The First Step for a successful restore is to create a so called "Recovery Area" which will hold the restored data, for this, the Exchange System Manager is used:
After the System Manager has been started, browse to the "Server" Tab, right click it and create a new Recovery Storage Are through "New -> Recovery Storage Group"
In the Properties for the Recovery Storage Area the Path to the Transactional Logs and the Database Files can be set.
Both have to reside on the same partition, please be sure to have enough free space on the Partition you create the Recovery area for.
After the Recovery Storage Group has been created it is time to attach a certain database to this group. During the restore, the database in the rcovery storage group will be overwritten.
Right Click the Recovery Storage Group an choose "Add Database to Recover".
This will open a Window with all your available Databases, like shown in this screenshot:
Choose the Database you want to restore and confirm with "OK".
After the Recovery Storage Group has been created, it is time to restore the sesam save set. The steps are the following:
Start the Restore wizard and choose the Exchange Task:
Choose The Save Set and use "complete restore of the selected task":
In the next window, leave everything to default but Auto recover and online ater restore:
After a successful sesam restore the Database in the Recovery Area can be mounted and a list of mailboxes should appear:
Extracting The Data
The ExMerge utility is used to extract data from the RSG mailbox store. Note though, that the only supported interface for extracting this data is via the Exchange 2003 version of ExMerge. You can find this version of ExMerge at the Exchange 2003 site here. The main screen that's of interest here is the Database Selection screen, since it is important that you choose the Recovery Storage Group. After doing this, you will be presented with a list of mailboxes held in the mailbox store in the RSG which you can then export to PST.
